Things have been going fairly well up until a week ago. My exercise routine was fun, and quite effective too. We met with family this week, people whom I hadn't seen in a couple of months, and it was nice hearing the compliments lol. I finally noticed a change on the scale as well. Over the past 8 weeks I lose approximately 8 lbs. Now, that's not a lot, I know, but I am positive that I gained quite a lot of muscle mass too, so hopefully the actual fat loss is more than 8 lbs.
However, about a week and a half ago I got the flu and took a break from training for a few days. More importantly, just prior to that I managed to injure myself during training. I pushed things a bit too far on the elliptical and ended up with what I thought was a nasty spasm. But almost two weeks later, I finally realized I had actually have a proper calf muscle strain, the kind that all websites recommend the RICE treatment for, for a period of 2-4 weeks :(
At this point, I'm torn. The sensible part in me (yes, there is one!) tells me to follow the procedure and let the muscle heal. I did go to the gym this week, and probably made it all a bit worse, to the point where it suddenly hurt so bad I had to get off the treadmill altogether and call hubby to give me a ride back home. I couldn't walk without a very intense pain in my calf... Then again, I keep wondering, what if I go for a relatively mild workout, maybe use the bike more, and keep walking down to low pace, no uphill, kind of walking? I realize it won't rest the leg, but frankly, I am a bit weary of not working out for a few weeks. I am so much more fit now, it would be a shame to lose it all and get back to the start :(
Anyway, I think I'll take a break now, and go rest my leg on some ice for a bit. It's not fun at all, makes my foot freeze, but since I probably am taking the day off practice, I guess I might as well do the RICE thing properly :p

Starting a New Week of Working Out
Wow, been a lazy girl for two whole days! Didn't work out on the weekend (that's our Friday and Saturday). Planning on going in a couple of hours, start my week again.
I did plan on a walk on Friday, but it was raining. I am not going to the gym Friday mornings anymore. Don't laugh, but there's this trainer there that scares me away lol. He's this big Russian guy there that wants to throw me into a tough training regime. Now, I don't mind a training regime, in fact, I have one of my own, but this guy wanted to give me a weird one for "body sculpting". Plus, he was of the Chernobyl school of training, very Russian, very strict, no smiling policy. I don't like that one bit. He wrote down the plan for me, on a piece of paper, and I kept smiling (foolishly, there was no smile coming back) and nodding my head lol. My new regime from now on is to avoid him. Fortunately, he's never at the gym during the morning, which is my training time. Unfortunately, he's there on Fridays, so I'm thinking of staying away for a few Fridays at least.... Hence, the plan was for a walk on Friday, but it's raining so bad here these past few days, that I had to skip the Friday walk...
So... to keep a long story short, I skipped two days and now it's back to full time training. I better stick to it for the next five days... two hours a day at the very least... Good luck to me!

Happy Slim New Year!
Can't start a new year without a post in a weight loss blog, can ya? ;)
So, where am I? I weighed myself on Saturday. Promised myself I wouldn't weigh until I finish a whole month of the new 2 hours a day at the gym routine, but I did anyway. I only lost 3 measly pounds... but I can feel the extra muscle tissue and muscle is supposed to weigh more than fat, so maybe it's not that bad.
Still going strong with the gym sessions. Last couple of times I was getting sort of dizzy when on the treadmill. I'll see today if maybe I need to switch to doing bike more. I think it may just be some mild ear infection, but still not feeling like falling off the machine while "treading" ;)
Happy New Year to us all. May next New Year's Eve find less of me around! Going to the gym now... bye all!

Exhausting Workouts
Whew, just got back home about an hour ago from another long workout. Ever since I signed up at the gym, which seems like years ago, but was only three days ago... I went for 2 hours workouts daily. It's fun and actually not a bad way to get away from everything, sweat things out, with some nice music and a silly talk show on the screen (they're with subtitles here, so I don't have to actually hear what they're saying, just read along).
The main problem so far is that it's getting me very very tired. Today it's even worse, since I got about three hours of sleep here last night. A bunch of idiots were throwing a party and blasting our neighborhood with music until 2 am. We had to call the police twice before it was stopped... I was tempted to cancel my workout for today, it was just so hard to get out of bed in the morning. But I dragged myself over anyway, bought a Redbull on the way, and worked out for just over two hours. Am I proud of myself? sure! But I'm also totally and absolutely exhausted lol

New Execise Regime
Wow, I can't believe it's been almost a month since my last (and first) post here. I didn't forget about this blog, just got carried away with doing other stuff. I kept updating it mentally lol, during workouts, but never got around to actually doing it while online.
I have embarked and a new and more challegnging weight loss program. I found that 1 hour a day of exercise (i.e. walking and keeping my heartbeat rate at 135 bpm) isn't enough. I am just not losing weight with that. Admittedly, these workouts ended up being 4-5 times a week. Life just got in the way. I dedicated my mornings to work (at the computer), then the kids get home, I spend some time with them and then do my walk in the afternoon, either alone with hubby watching over the kids at home, or with the whole family. Now, walks with the family tended to be less effective, speed-wise. Anyone who's ever tried going on a hike with a 3 years old probably knows what I mean. We walked with a stroller and a backpack, of course, but the kiddies still want off them every now and again, "to run" alongside mom and dad. Then, there are all sorts of things that make them stop (try butterfiles or any other insect, an interesting car on the road, or just a thought that crossed their mind and required a long speech - while standing in place, of course).
Bottom line was, I wasn't losing weight like this, and I have tried this pretty much over a year. So, time to speed things up now. I enrolled in a gym and decided to boost workouts up to 2 hours a day. What's more, going to be doing morning workouts. That means better, longer and more focused workouts, but it also means less, much less, work time for me.
I started this week. I wake up, help with the house and the kids, then sit by the computer for a couple of hours, barely managing emails and checking on stats and stuff, then it's time to get my gym gear and head over to the gym. I walk all the way there, for 20 minutes, then workout for about 80 minutes, focusing on things like the treadmill, the eliptycal and the exercise bike, and keeping my heartbeat rate high through out the workout. Then it's the 20 minutes brisk walk back home. All in all, two hours of exercise.
Then I get back home, eat something, take a good long shower and I just have to take a nap. It's amazing how tiring these workouts are for me. I hope it gets better soon. The thing most to be affected at this point in time is my work time. But after having discussed this for a long time with my husband, we have come to the decision that my health comes first. It would do no one no good if I get diabetes by the time I'm 40. The process has to be stopped now. So, looks like 2007 is the big weight loss year for me. Well, considering how much I need to shed, it might be 2007 and 2008 as well...

Friday, November 24, 2006
Well, here we are, first post on my new slimming down blog. I just started the blog, so tweaking design and such might follow later. For now, I thought I'd just jot down the starting point here :)
I am 34 years old (ok, and a half...). I know, a woman isn't supposed to reveal her weight... it should be classified information, not something shared with the world. But... I need the commitment, so out with it... I'll start with a very important point though, so you won't get this image of a totally rounded person right away lol. I am 180 cm tall. That's 5'11'' and that's quite tall for a girl. So, when you read the following numbers don't let your jaw hit the floor. The numbers are bad, but they at least spread over across a lot of height.
Enough apologizing... But I will make it a bit complicated... Ten years ago I used to weigh almost half of what I weigh today. I used to weigh 60 kgs, which is 132 lbs. That is not a lot for my height. In fact, it's very little, within the top models range easily. Now, mind, this was when I was at my thinnest, borderline anorexic even. I used to simply eat very very little, an average of 500 calories a day, and workout in the gym religiously. And I still looked in the mirror, thought I was still fat, and tried to lose some more. Reading these last two sentences again, yes, I think it's fair to say I have an eating disorder of sorts.
When I reached the age of 18 or so, I had already reached my full height and weighed a constant 73 kgs, or 161lbs. Like most teenagers, I wasn't happy with my weight, but I had maintained a fairly steady weight for 2-3 years, not dieting, just staying the same weight. Then I dieted for the first time... and the roller coaster ride was set in motion. I lose six kgs (13lbs) on my first diet. Was a happy thinner girl for a while. Then got it all back with some bonuses a year later. Another diet, back to the 70kgs region.
Then, as I joined the IDF at the age of 20 (having spent 4 years in university prior to that), I began to really gain weight. Many female soldiers do, it's quite common here. You sit in an office the whole day, little exercise. Then you have a canteen, not far from you with very low priced snacks. So, twice a day, at least, you excersize. You walk to the canteen. In my case, the canteen was in the same building as our office, so I had to walk three floors down and then three floors back again. Not too much of an intensive workout, plus, too often we used the elevator lol. And even if we did go on foot, it still didn't offset the packets of snacks, chocolate and soft drinks that we got back with us. So, I grew some more. And then some more. Changed uniform size until I reached about 85kgs (187 lbs). Then I felt really terribly fat. I got depressed over it, and over other things too. I reached a lowpoint of feeling unattractive. I was really really down.
One day, on my way home, on the bus I had an epiphany. I had been feeling down for a while, to the point of having an existential sort of depression. Thoughts about what's the point of life at all and such. Most people have had such an episode at some point, so I won't dwelve on this (not in this blog anyway). This post is getting too long as it is... So, to make a long story a bit shorter, I decided to challenge myself. To make life meaningful again by setting myself up with a challenge. To lose that extra weight and get really super sexy and attractive. I knew this would be a long process, and I decided to look at it like a game. Something to keep me busy mentally with a good, positive challenge. The next day, I had a talk with a fellow officer, a collegaue. We were talking about my weight issues, she (a very very thin person), saying how I indeed need to overcome my eating obsession. I told her about my new challenege and added one for her. I was to lose 10kgs and she was supposed to quit smoking. My point was to show her how hard it is to overcome food addiction. She said yes, and I went ahead. I ended up losing 25kgs. She never gave up smoking...
So, move forward to the age of 23. You have this thin tall person there, weighing 60kgs (132 lbs) and trying to lose more. Regularly at the gym, very fit, in great shape and feeling great too. I lost my glasses and switched to contact lenses. I got a new haircut and dyed my hair blonde... You get the picture - one hot chic! Flaunting it all with some cool clothes bought in shopping sprees in Paris no less! And then meeting the man of a her dreams among quite a few suitors at that time. A guy so wonderful, I remember thinking when we met, that's it's a shame I still want to play when such amazing husband material comes along lol. Well, I quit playing and gave up an interesting job offer out of the country and hooked up with him. Best thing that ever happened to me!
And so I began the "domestic bliss" phase of my life. We moved in together and I began playing "the housewife". We shared the cleaning chores, but I was in charge of cooking... and began some culinary enterprises there. And when you have such great food, pies and quiches galore, and pastas and cakes and what not... well, you get the picture. I gradually began gaining weight again. Things weren't that bad, but about two years later, for reasons best discussed in a separate blog (or at least a separate post), I became depressed again. A longer episode this time, and accompanied by panic attacks. I finally got medicated with prozac which literally saved my life. Life got better again, but I gained even more weight. Add to that a couple of pregnancies, each of them adding it's share to the weight gain and you get me today at, taking a deep breath here, 119 kgs or 262lbs... There, I've said it. Revealed my weight to the world lol.
I think this post has gotten long enough though, so might be time to wrap things up for today. I need to go and tuck in the kids anyway. I will be posting about my recent weight loss efforst in the coming few days. Thank you for stopping by, if you got this far reading this!
